Spring Style Before and After : MK Olsen

17 May

Here recently at Pin Up Boot Camp we’ve been talking about changing up our look a bit for the Spring. Maybe add a bit of color to your makeup or wardrobe palette… Maybe try a different look or style. Well, one of the Olsen Twins seemed to have taken that advice and ran with it.

Here’s a before-picture of Mary Kate Olsen. Though we love how comfortable and confident she is, and while there’s no true rules of style we are pretty sure she is breaking quite a few and we love that she doesn’t seem to care…

Now, we aren’t suggesting that you do anything drastic to update your look this Spring. But we have to admit that we definitely love the vast change in the after image. This is certainly an update from hobo-chic to polished-pinup! Here’s the full after-picture of Mary Kate Olsen.

Spring Skin and Makeup Tips

9 May

spring makeup upgrade

Spring into the new season and upgrade your skin care and makeup routine with these great ideas and tips that we here at Pin Up Boot Camp have compiled, just for you. Your Winter weather skin will thank you! During the Winter, our skin has to deal with things like indoor heat and outdoor cold which can leave the skin feeling dry and flaky by the time Spring rolls around. And for a lot of us, our winter makeup palette can certainly use a colorful springtime update.

The number one tip in springtime skin care is exfoliation. However, there are some important do’s and don’t’s that we would like to share with you. WebMD’s article titled: Spring Cleaning: How to Pamper Your Skin recommends to never use an exfoliation machine on your face, and it also warns that certain exfoliation scrubs may even be too harsh for the delicate skin on the face:

“Scrubs that contain walnut shells or apricot pits, for example, can cause microscopic tears in the skin that can ultimately make dry winter skin look and feel much worse, especially on your face,” says Heidi Waldorf, MD, director of dermatologic laser surgery at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City.¬†Instead, Waldorf suggests a cleanser or moisturizer containing an alpha-hydroxy acid, such as this¬†Beauty Without Cruelty Alpha Hydroxy Facial Cleanser, or¬†beta-hydroxy acid (for those with acne), like this Dermastage Beta Hydroxy Cleanser. If you feel you must try some “mechanical” form of exfoliation, Waldorf suggests gentle cleansing cloths like the type made by Dove¬†or Olay.

Dry flaky makeup is not allowed in the Spring. Thick cakey makeup is not allowed in the Spring. For Spring you want dew drop skin with a touch of glow. An easy way to do this is to trade your liquid foundation to a tinted moisturizer; especially one with a sunscreen, like this Aveeno Positively Radiant, in SPF 30. You can also accomplish the same thing by mixing your liquid foundation with a moisturizing facial sunscreen, like this Neutrogena Ultimate Sport, in SPF 70 which is also water-resistant.

Forgo the heavy powders and switch to a loose setting powder; the e.l.f. Studio High Definition Loose Powder is perfect and we love this brand because it is great quality and really affordable. If you are typically not a liquid foundation user, then now is the time to make the switch to an SPF face powder, which can be used instead of a liquid sunscreen. We recommend using an SPF powder that also provides coverage, such as this e.l.f. Studio SPF 45 Sunscreen Powder.

Shifting from the wintertime neutrals, Spring time allows us to flirt with color, which we love! The first thing you can do is play up the natural color of your skin by adding a highlighter to your makeup routine. Use a highlighter, like the¬†e.l.f. Mineral Booster Shimmer, to show off your favorite features, one at a time. Experiment on your cheekbones, eyelids, or browbones; just remember to pick one feature to highlight, and then try a new one the next day. Shimmers and highlighters come in varying amounts of glow-inducing intensity, so make sure that you aren’t overdoing it. And by no means should glitter be confused with a shimmer.

You can easily transition your Winter look into Spring by choosing one accent color to add to your daily-to-day makeup. While it is fun to play around with the season’s trendy colors, like orange and purple, you should feel free to choose any color you like and see how it works. A simple way to add color into your daily makeup look is to use colored eyeliners;¬†baby blue¬†or teal¬†are great colors to get you started. If you really want to spring into Spring, the NYX Spring Fling Palette¬†is an awesome mini-palette with great spring time colors and it will look really cute on your vanity beside some fresh Spring blossoms.¬†¬†Makeup is supposed to be fun, so you can have fun coming up with different color combos everyday if you like!

Closet Organization Idea Round-up

7 May

closet organize idea 5

Closet organization is as much about wardrobe storage as it about protecting your clothing investment, your clothes will last longer if they are well-kept. A well organized closet also helps you save time from searching for pieces and, if they are stored correctly, you will also save time on ironing wrinkled blouses or pants. One of the biggest organization overload issues for many of us are our Clothes, and Shoes, and Accessories, oh my!! Never fear! We have compiled some of our favorite organization tips and wardrobe ideas for you so that you can have a closet fit for a Pin Up.

closet organize idea

To begin, we should all redefine our meaning of “closet space.” For most of us, closet space is limited to the built-in¬†crevices that come in our homes. However, we can create unlimited closet options once we look at our home with different eyes. For example, instead of hanging a large painting to fill a ‘focus wall’ in a living room, you can hang industrial shelving and put your wardrobe on display as an art piece. Both of the photos above are perfect examples of how your wardrobe can be gorgeously displayed, whether it is in a living room or a home office.

closet organize

Most built-in closet crevices typically only come with a single rod stretched across the top. However, thanks to DIY closet kits, we can add a lot more customization to our closets. Depending on your needs you can spend less than $40 for a complete closet kit that provides shelving and multi-level hanging rods so that you can really maximize your space and keep your clothes organized. This is the most common way to make the most of your built-in closet space and it is really easy to install with the help of a power drill (and any Pin Up worth her salt owns one and knows how to use it). The image above shows how you can create 3 different spaces for hanging-clothes plus drawers and shelves for folded-clothes, sweaters, and shoes.

closet organize idea 2

If your home or apartment doesn’t include (enough) built-in closet crevices, then it is up to you to use your open spaces creatively. Open-space closets are becoming more popular as women take control of the situation and redefine their space. The image above is a great example! Instead of placing your bed right up against the wall, move it into the middle of the room and use that wide-open wall as a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe space. You can always store your laundry baskets behind your headboard to keep dirty clothes of sight, and you can even hang a wall to wall curtain to hide your wardrobe as well.

closet organize idea 1If you don’t have a wall-to-wall space you can buy some cheap wire racks from the hardware store and then cover the whole thing with coordinating fabric to match your room. The wire racks are typically found in the garage storage section in hardware stores and they are very durable, meant to store heavy machines and gear, so they are perfect for hanging clothes and storing shoes. This idea is also a great¬†supplement¬†to built-in closets, just in case you need a bit of extra wardrobe storage. I love this as an idea for storing your Pin Up or Burlesque costumes as well, that way you can keep them separate from your “every day” wardrobe. For less than $50 you can buy a Double Rod Closet¬†to get you started. The plus side to this is, since everything is covered up, you can put this in any room and hide your wardrobe in plain sight while adding a bit of color and fun depending on the fabric you use to cover it all.

closet organize idea 3Another overlooked option for wardrobe storage is and empty wall in a bathroom or hallway. These are great spots for open-air closets, especially the bathroom as that is where most of us get dressed anyway. However, we do not recommend using a bathroom environment for storing things like fur, silks, or feathered hairpieces or boas, as the humidity may affect the material. Even a narrow wall can provide a floor-to-ceiling option for organizing your clothes, shoes, hats, and bags. All you need is a couple of these Shelves with Hanging Rods (less than $15 a pop) and maybe a Closet Doubler (around $10) if you need extra space for hanging clothes.

We hope these ideas inspire you to get organized, creatively, without spending a lot of money! What are your favorite closet organization tips? We would love to hear from you! Share your tips in the comments section, or post them at FaceBook.com/PinUpBootCamp

25 Apr

Imagine being featured as a model in an international magazine…just after your 41st birthday!!! Many models have the goal of becoming a published model with international exposure, but a lot of us never get that opportunity – and that’s OK, there’s much more to being a Pin Up than that.

However, Anastasia Foxx is a shining example of how using your mantra will help you to not only live a Shiny life, but it can also help you achieve your goals!

You’ll want to watch this whole thing to the end, it is so incredibly inspiring!!!!
